Indoor
Beyond regular happenings in the Greater Des Moines metro, there are some special events and activities that are indoor attractions that are perfect for all ages. If you’re into crafting, a hobbyist, or simply need a day out with your friends or family, the Annual Spring Arts & Crafts Show will be at the Iowa State Fairgrounds from March 13-15. Or for those who prefer their art on stage, don’t miss The Music Man, coming to the Civic Center as a part of the Willis Broadway Series March 20-22.
At Casey’s Center on March 19, 22, and 23 between 6 and 7:30 p.m., drop-in to learn how to ice skate in partnership with the Iowa Figure Skating Association! If skates with wheels are more your style, then check out Skate South and do something a little different with your spring break time.
Now, this could be argued to be both indoor or outdoor, but either way, this is an experience you won’t want to miss. The Iowa Cubs are kicking off their season with a special open house, where all of Principal Park is open to the entire public from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.! Take yourself on a self-guided tour of the locker rooms, check out the NEW bullpens, and stand inside the broadcast booth.
Outdoor
Temperatures are looking a little low at the beginning of the week, BUT things will be warming up toward the end of the week! Enjoy the great outdoors this spring break with a discovery hike at Jester Park or at Fort Des Moines Park. Or, on March 20, join Polk County Conservation at Jester Park for a Stick Hike, perfect for little ones! Decorate your own hiking stick and head on the trails for a guided nature walk with a naturalist. Registration is required with the deadline being March 16.
Looking for other ways to spend a day outdoors? You’re in luck! The Greater Des Moines metro is home to many beautiful parks and trails. Lace up your sneakers and explore somewhere new.
For Kids
Our Des Moines kids are home for spring break, so what’s in store for them? Starting at Casey’s Center, Jurassic Quest is a dinosaur discovery event that will be here from March 13-15. Speaking of dinosaurs, the DSM Children's Museum is hosting a Prehistoric Playtime on March 15 from noon-2 p.m. at Big Grove, recommended for ages 3-10 years old.
Love the Art Center, but worried your kids might not have the attention span for it? No worries! On Saturday, March 14 the Des Moines Art Center is hosting an “Entirely Kids Day” social. Completely free and from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., kids of all ages are invited to take part in special experiences, workshops, story times, and performances.
With art on the mind, Mainframe Studios is offering a variety of workshops for kids of different age groups all week during spring break. They can get hands-on experience in making art of different mediums, taught by local Iowa artisans. For students or older kids, check out Hoyt Sherman Place’s Education Day on March 19. Students will learn more about art, history and culture at this historic venue with hands-on activities and includes an exclusive look at the Des Moines Women’s Club Art Exhibition.
St. Patrick’s Day
If you’re in need of spring break plans, then what luck it is that St. Patrick’s Day and surrounding festivities all fall within it! Celebrating Irish heritage and culture, this holiday is all about spending time in the community (and knocking back a pint or two). Be sure to check out our full guide on how you can celebrate this year!
Live Music
Last, but definitely not least, spend some time this spring break experiencing a new band or genre. Spring break plans can be as simple as a night out for live jams. See them before they hit the xBk Live stage, The Crowdfoot Rakes will be at Middlebrook Mercantile on March 15, bringing a modern twist to Irish folk. If more niche, local bands are your thing, then the Fine Line Show Lounge at Prairie Meadows is your stomping grounds. During spring break, catch acts like the Mike Walsh Band, The Savage Freds, Anthony Koester Band, The Claudia Coltrain Band, and more!
Create a whole live music experience with a dinner and a show at The Ingersoll, starting with the Weary Ramblers on March 13 & 14. Or, end your spring break week with the one-man show “Purple Piano”, a special tribute to Prince on March 20 & 21.
