Historic Valley Junction Itinerary

STOP 1: HISTORIC JORDAN HOUSE

Start your day by stepping back in time at the Historic Jordan House. This 1850s Victorian house was an official site on the National Underground Railroad Network to freedom. Its 16 rooms tell the history of Senator James C. Jordan and how he played an influential role in bringing the railroad and state capitol to Des Moines. Jordan also played a large role in establishing Historic Valley Junction because those two events spurred the need for housing in the area which is now known as West Des Moines.

If you're not ready for the history lesson to end, check out the Bennett School. Located a mile west of the Historic Jordan House, the Bennett School was one of the last one-room schoolhouses built in West Des Moines. It was built in 1926 and stayed in use until at least 1941. The Historical Society offers tours upon request.
