Water Activties

No coastline needed here – Greater Des Moines has a variety of waterways and activities to fill your need for some fun in the sun. Our aquatic adventures will you have kayaking and floating down the Des Moines or Raccoon River and taking a ride on a pontoon or soaking up to sun on a beach of our many lakes. Our lakes and rivers provide aquatic lovers with scenic cliffs, flowing waterways, and rolling hills. So, whether you are out fishing or enjoying the waves, you'll never be far from a calm and beautiful view.

Swimming

Our metro is creating waves with all kinds of swimming opportunities for every age. During the warmer months, aquatic centers and pools fill up as people get their respite from the hot sun. Lakes become busy with boaters and swimmers alike as they soak up the best that the Midwest has to offer during the summer. Pack your swim trunks, swimsuits, flip flops, beach bags, and sunscreen for a great day.

Boating, Kayaking, Canoeing, & More

If being on the water and not in it is more your thing, Greater Des Moines has a plethora of ways you can sail away. Trade traffic for tranquil waters with a kayak, canoe, paddleboard, or boat in tow. Spend the afternoon gliding across Gray's Lake, winding through the peaceful waters of Easter Lake, or making waves at Saylorville Lake, where pontoons, fishing boats, and speedboats all find their happy place. Whether it’s paddling your kayak or canoe, or being the captain of your own pontoon, our lakes and creeks are a prime spot.

Fishing

Is there anything more calming than casting your reel into a body of water and taking in the sights and sounds around you? The Iowa DNR has an entire list of Des Moines metro fishing hot spots, including all the types of fish that you’ll be able to catch like largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, and more. Fishers can also take a look at the fishing atlas for more detailed information on these spots!

While Iowa may not be the Land of 10,000 Lakes (34 actually, but who's counting?), what we lack in quantity we make up for in quality. Whether your idea of an aquatic adventure involves a kayak, a pontoon, arm floaties, or a sandy beach, there are plenty of ways to dive into the fun.
