4th of July 

There’s no better way to kick off July than celebrating Independence Day in Greater Des Moines! Whether you’re looking for fireworks displays, live music, or other ways to spend the holiday weekend enjoying the sunshine, we’ve got you covered. Cheer on the Iowa Cubs, splash away the day at Adventureland, or catch a local parade. Plus, there are fireworks shows happening in every corner of the metro, so plan accordingly. National Senior Games 

When National Senior Games arrive in town this month, more than 12,000 athletes will arrive alongside them. Athletes ages 50 and older will flock to Greater Des Moines to compete in more than 20 different sports. Cheer on the athletes in beach volleyball, pickleball, cycling, and more. Want to participate in the games yourself? Run the Mile for the Ages race on Friday, June 25. This 1-mile race is open to all and celebrates community, wellness, and the spirit of the Games. Learn more about the games and sign up to run here.

Sukup IndyCar Race Weekend   

IndyCar returns to Iowa Speedway, “The Fastest Short Track on the Planet,” from Friday, July 12 through Sunday, July 13, for a weekend packed with high-speed action and non-stop entertainment. Fans can enjoy Free Family Friday with open paddocks, autograph sessions, and the Pit Stop Challenge, all at no cost. The short oval delivers intense wheel-to-wheel racing across two 250-lap races, while off-track excitement includes food trucks, beer gardens, family zones, and more. With its electric festival atmosphere and up-close fan access, it’s the ultimate race weekend experience. 

Des Moines Metro Opera Festival Season  

It’s officially festival season at the Des Moines Metro Opera. Head south to Indianola to experience the beauty of opera, with four shows available for individual ticket purchases. The 467-seat arena-style theatre is a unique way to be close to the action for beautiful shows. Enjoy the romantic showing of The Flying Dutchman, the ups and downs of The Cunning Little Vixen, and more. Find all the shows here

Waitress 

Experience the heartwarming and charming musical Waitress, brought to life by Grammy-nominated Sara Bareilles. This inspiring story follows Jenna, a waitress and gifted pie-maker, who enters a baking contest in hopes of escaping her small‑town life and oppressive marriage. Filled with memorable songs, quirky humor, and touching friendships, Waitress is described as “refreshing as a slice of marshmallow mermaid pie”. Catch these delightful performances at the Des Moines Playhouse July 11 – 27, complete with pre-show talks, accessible accommodations, and ticket assistance available for anyone hoping to enjoy this empowering and delicious treat. 

Dino Park Zoo 

The Blank Park Zoo is transforming into the Dino Park Zoo starting in July. While exploring the zoo, find 15 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs and experience dino-themed exhibits, activities, and events. These dinosaurs are as realistic as you’ll find — they were created by the world-renowned team at Dino Don. You’ll find all your favorite dinos: Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Styracosaurus, and more. This experience is included with general admission; no extra tickets are needed. 50th Anniversary Farmers Market Event 

While the Downtown Farmers’ Market has been happening weekly since May, this 50th anniversary celebration is going to be bigger and better than ever. Explore more than 140 different vendors with extended hours, live music on a main stage, special giveaways, a market-themed scavenger hunt, and even a bucket list challenge to guide your adventure. Vendors offer everything from fresh produce to baked goods and handmade gifts. Come celebrate 50 years of flavor, community, and tradition in the heart of Downtown Des Moines! 

National Balloon Classic 

A classic favorite in Des Moines is back! The National Balloon Classic in Indianola returns from July 25 – August 2. This event features over 100 hot air balloons that fill the sky with gorgeous colors. Balloons fly every night at 6:30 p.m. and feature live music each night as well. While at the festival enjoy a drone show, food and beverage choices, and so much more. With nine days to choose from, there’s something for everyone with the National Balloon Classic.
