With Spring temperatures sweeping in, ice-skaters said farewell to ‘fun on the ice & magic in the air’ as Brenton Skating Plaza held its last public skate of the season on Sunday March 15, 2009. Brenton Skating Plaza opened for the 2008-09 Season on November 14, 2008 offering a plethora of outdoor activities including public skating seven days a week (even holidays!), Learn To Skate sessions, and Broomball Leagues, just to name a few. In its third season of operation, Brenton Skating Plaza has remained a favorite central Iowa attraction with a total 08-09 season attendance of 29,524 people.

Brenton Skating Plaza continues to play a prominent role in the community as host to a variety of fundraisers/charitable events such as AID the Orphans, Go Red for Women with the American Heart Association, Iowans for Life, Build A Bridge Campaign (Principal River Walk event), Nothing But Nets, and local food/clothing drives. The 2008-09 Season was highlighted by appearances by local sports teams and celebrities; among them were the Iowa Energy, Iowa Chops, and Des Moines Buccaneers, in addition to various radio personalities. Brenton Skating Plaza participated in the second annual Des Moines Winter Games, hosting a figure skating exhibition, the first annual Des Moines Firefighters Fire & Ice Chili Cook-off, and a Snowman Building Contest. Brenton was also host to the KXNO Broomball Tournament, the chosen site for several marriage proposals, countless birthday parties, and numerous corporate, school, and church group outings and events (including out-of-state groups!). This season also featured the venue’s first-ever wedding on ice! “Every year it gets better and better,” says Robbin McClelland, General Manager of Brenton Skating Plaza, of the Season’s programming and activities. “We are excited that so many people have embraced Brenton Skating Plaza as one of their favorite destinations for winter fun.” Brenton Skating Plaza plans to reopen for its’ 4th season in November 2009.

Brenton Skating Plaza is Des Moines’ only permanent outdoor ice skating facility and family entertainment venue.
