SAVE THE DATE! World War I Benefit Concert, Sunday, November 11, 2:00pm
Highland Park American Legion Post #374, 3712 2nd Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50313

At the 11:00th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th Month, 1918, an Armistice went into effect ending World War I. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the Highland Park American Legion Post #374 are teaming up to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of both the Armistice and the founding of the American Legion, by offering a “music hall” experience where songs from the World War I era will be sung. The Army, Air Force, Marine, Navy and Coast Guard service songs also will be sung and veterans or active duty servicemen can stand and sing out their song. Soloists will sing the lyrics while the chorus and audience join in on the refrains, as was done back in the days of music halls. About a dozen songs, including “Over There”, “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary”, and “Keep the Home Fires Burning” will be included in the song list. Audience members will have their own songbook to take home as souvenirs.

This promises to be a fun “sing-a-long”, as was done 100 years ago. A free will offering will be accepted with all proceeds to benefit the Puppy Jake Foundation, an organization in Des Moines that trains puppies to be service dogs for military veterans. Light refreshments will be served. Join us on November 11th to honor those who volunteered 100 years ago!!
