Des Moines European Heritage Association invites you to explore the French language during this 12-week French language course for adults (starting Thursday, September 2, 2021) Classes will not be held 10/21, 11/25. During each 90-minute session, you will have the opportunity to learn language for everyday life and explore culture, all the while developing proficiency with grammar and vocabulary.
This immersive class focuses on usage of the language, addressing questions of grammar on an as-needed basis. We will read two short novels -“Le Petit Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (ISBN: 978-2070612758) and “Stupeur et Tremblements” by Amélie Nothomb (978-2253150718) - and also have an emphasis on speaking and listening practice.
There will be assigned homework and studying each week. A textbook and workbook will need to be purchased by the student prior to the beginning of the course in addition to the course fee of $144. These materials will need to be ordered online and cost approximately $40 (including shipping).
Please expect to spend 2.5 - 8 hours on homework every week. Everyone learns languages at their own pace. In order to remember it the best, you should spend about 20-30 minutes every day with your homework. Regular self-study and repetition or meeting with others might be helpful. Having a general understanding of English grammar or having studied another language is helpful, but not required. The course is structured to expand language skills through cultural studies. This class is non-credit but designed to eventually lead to language proficiency in writing, reading and speaking. [Remove: The books are from France and in French, however developed for non-native speakers with a goal of building proficiency.] We will study a variety of French-language documents, such as novels, news articles, radio or podcasts, television, film, and other media.
