Iowa History 101: Soldier Mob in Keokuk

  • Overview

Join Stefan Lund, a doctoral candidate at the University of Virginia, as he discusses an 1863 mob attack by Union soldiers on a Keokuk newspaper. He will examine similar examples of Civil War-era violence against the press throughout the Midwest, some of the ways that popular conceptions of loyalty and civic duty contributed to the violence, and the significance of the First Amendment in war time. The online presentation is part of the “Iowa History 101” series offered by the State Historical Society of Iowa to commemorate Iowa’s 175th year of statehood. The event is free and will be recorded, but registration is required. #Iowa175
