    Des Moines European Heritage Association invites you to explore the French language during this 8-week intermediate French language course for adults (starting Thursday, April 25, 2019). During each 90-minute session, you will have the opportunity to learn language for everyday life and explore culture, all the while developing proficiency with grammar and vocabulary.

    There will be assigned homework and studying each week. A textbook and workbook will need to be purchased by the student prior to the beginning of the course in addition to the course fee of $96. These materials will need to be ordered online and cost approximately $50 (including shipping).

    Please expect to spend 2.5 - 8 hours on homework every week. Everyone learns languages at their own pace. In order to remember it the best, you should spend about 20-30 minutes every day with your homework. Regular self-study and repetition or meeting with others might be helpful.
    Having a general understanding of English grammar or having studied another language is helpful, but not required.
    The course is structured to learn vocabulary and grammar from scratch while covering a variety of everyday topics.
    This class is non-credit but designed to eventually lead to language proficiency in writing, reading and speaking.
    The books are from France and in French, however developed for non-native speakers with a goal of building proficiency.

    Competencies required to enter A2.4: Knowledge of common, standard verbs and commonly used irregular verbs in the present tense. Ability to describe oneself based on nationality, place of residence, likes/dislikes, and clothing. Ability to speak about one’s family and the weather. Ability to function in everyday situations such as shopping, going out to eat, cooking/reading a recipe, and planning an outing. Talk about future plans and hypothetical situations. Good familiarity with the passé composé verb tense (French simple past). Knowlege of: Future, imperative, past imperfect, and subjunctive verb tenses.

    "DELF PREP" Option

    Description - Prepare to take the DELF exam. One practice exam including one 30 minute speaking exam practice session. For more information about DELF/DALF exams see: http://www.ciep.fr/en/delf-tout-public

    DELF Prep pre requisite: None, but must be a current student in a weekly DMEHA French language class

    Our adult language programs utilize the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) which is a guideline used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and other countries. CEFRL is a system of validation of language ability and can be utilized by job applicants and adult students to demonstrate their language proficiency.

    About the instructor: Laura Deavers studied French and studied abroad in Marseilles, France as an undergraduate at Grinnell College. She received her Master’s Degree in European Literature and Culture in 2014 from Lille University in Villeneuve d’Ascq, France, where French was the language of instruction. She passed the C2 Level DALF exam in 2014. She lived and worked in France for seven years, teaching English as a Foreign Language and working at the International Relations Office of the Lille University. Since moving back to the Des Moines area she has truely enjoyed teaching French to adult learners. She and her husband love watching French films and eating simple and fresh meals inspired by cuisine from all over the world. She loves French food, music, culture and film, and hopes to share this passion with you!
