  • Overview

Civic Music Association (CMA) will welcome world-renowned pianist Garrick Ohlsson as part of the Lauridsen Great Pianists Series on Saturday, February 25 at Sheslow Auditorium.

Garrick Ohlsson first rose to fame in 1970 after winning the esteemed International Chopin Competition, and his since established himself as one of the greatest pianists of both the 20th and 21st century.

The Lauridsen Great Pianists Series was conceptualized by Nixon and Virginia Lauridsen. The couple was inspired by a trip to the Aspen Music Festival, where they heard some of the most celebrated musicians. As Iowa natives, the two believed Des Moines deserves to be visited by world class talent. Specifically, Virginia’s background in piano further compelled them to focus the series on the instrument.

Ohlsson will be the second artist featured in the series after its inception last season. However, it is not his first CMA performance, having last played with the organization in 1978. The world-renowned musician is a staple in CMA’s rich history of featured pianists, with past performers including Sergei Rachmaninoff and Philip Glass.
