  • Overview

On July 7, 2018, the Griffin Family and the Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission will honor the 70th anniversary of Edna Griffin’s sit-in at Katz Drug Store in Des Moines to protest segregated lunch counters with the Edna Griffin Legacy Awards Dinner. The sit-in, which came seven years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, sparked picketing of the establishment, sit ins, civil lawsuits and a successful lawsuit against the owner of the drugstore. Edna Griffin’s courageous acts foreshadowed the civil rights movement and paved the way for Iowa to lead the way in the fight for equality for all.

The Edna Griffin Legacy Awards Dinner will feature speakers, music, dinner, and an awards ceremony to honor Edna Griffin and Iowa's own civil rights trailblazers. Tickets for this occasion are offered at very affordable prices:
    • General Admission tickets $30 (per person)
    • Half-Table $105 (4 Reserved Seats)
    • Whole-Table $200 (8 Reserved Seats)
Tickets can be purchased at http://bit.ly/ednagriffinlegacy. In addition to the dinner we will also have the Edna Griffin Award of Courage and Stanley Griffin Trailblazer Award. Find out more and view the nomination forms by visiting: http://bit.ly/ednagriffinlegacy. As we mark the 70th anniversary of Edna Griffin being turned away at Katz for the color of her skin, we celebrate the life of an Iowan hero and remind ourselves that although the principle of equality has always been self-evident, it has never been self-executing.

Please join us in celebrating the life of a true Iowa legend and Iowa’s rich civil rights legacy!
