Decades of commitment to women, organic farming and sustainable agriculture prompted Denise O’Brien to establish the Women, Food, and Agriculture Network in 1997. Many recall her campaign for a position as Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture in 2006 blazing a new trail in a field dominated by men. Learn how she has organized, advocated and helped raise women’s voices in agriculture with the lifelong hope of creating sustainable living and food security.

Valentina Fominykh, PhD – Professor and Independent Public Policy Professional
A TALE OF TWO COUNTRIES

Dr. Valentina Fominykh grew up in the Communist-ruled Soviet Union, becoming a professor at the USSR Academy of Agricultural Sciences and lead interpreter/facilitator for the USSR Olympic Committee. She came to Iowa in 1989 with a delegation of the first freely elected Soviet Parliament which resulted in an agreement to begin new economic relationships between the USSR and Iowa. Dr. Fominykh returned as a visiting professor in 1990, just prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Throughout her career, Dr. Fominykh has worked with state, national, and international businesses and cultural organizations, and for the past 7 years, she has been involved in citizen diplomacy dating to the Garst/Kruschev exchange.
