  • Overview

Candeo's Wheelchair Basketball Competition is returning in 2019 with more opportunities to participate!

Pull together a social team to compete against other amateurs in a tournament-style bracket! Watch our traditional teams face off as they always do, as we have DSM Police vs DSM Fire, Grand View vs Drake, and a championship game!

    Beginning in the morning:
Game 1: Grand View University vs. Drake University
Game 2: Des Moines Police Department vs. Des Moines Fire Department
Game 3: Championship game featuring winners of Game 1 and Game 2!
    Break/Open Court
After noon: 3 on 3 Social Teams tournament starts

This is Candeo's 7th year hosting this annual event. At the request of the community, we are introducing an amateur 3 on 3 social bracket. Social teams consist of 3-5 individuals, who will play a 12 minute game against another social team. Minimum team entry fee is $150; raise over the entry fee for a higher seed in our tournament bracket!

Drake, Grand View, Des Moines Police, and Des Moines Fire will be joining us again for the competitive tournament. Your $10 ticket earns you entry to the stands for the tournament, and you're welcome to stay for the social games! Each game in the morning tournament will feature its own halftime entertainment from local acts--including a Local Mascot Free Throw Contest!

This event gives us an opportunity to expand the definition of ability and athletic skill, and highlights the progress and challenges of building a community that is accessible and inclusive to people with disabilities. Proceeds from Wheelchair Basketball go to supporting individuals with disabilities to increase their independence and thrive in the community. Candeo clients work as employees at local businesses, volunteer at a variety of non-profit organizations, and are active, driven community members. Tickets and contributions forward the mission of Candeo to inspire our clients to achieve their personal goals, so everybody can enjoy a community empowered by the contribution of all.
