Armed with a beer & a cause, one of the most unique charities in Iowa is ready help those in need. Blood, Sweat and Beers, known as BSB, is a Des Moines based organization focused on helping Iowans who are battling blood cancer offset the expenses that don’t stop just because they are sick. While there are some tremendous resources for information & treatment of blood cancers including organizations whose primary goal is for research & development, BSB founders noticed a huge hole/gap when it comes to helping Iowa families with the financial burden this diagnosis carries. “As if getting the horrific news that you or your loved one has been diagnosed with blood cancer wasn’t bad enough, imagine the additional financial questions that must also be addressed,” said executive board member Larry Laughlin. Tim Mauro, another member of the executive board added, “How will I pay for the travel and lodging expense if the treatment center is in a completely different city or state? What happens when I run out of paid time-off (vacation/sick) from my job because I need to be away from work to seek treatment? What if I get fired from my job due to the amount of time off needed to seek treatment for me or a loved one? These are the reasons our organization exists. The need is real.” Laughlin & Mauro saw the need, and wanted to help. “Life (and all the bills that come with it) still rack up even while the diagnosis will sap additional financial resources… this is the COLLATERAL DAMAGE of blood cancer treatment and for those Iowa families who do NOT have the financial wherewithal to sustain this, BSB steps in to provide these families with direct financial assistance,” said Laughlin. Blood, Sweat and Beers’ marquise event, a 5k walk and run open to anyone, is scheduled for downtown Des Moines on October 5th. The race starts at 10 AM. Runners who sign up get beer, food, and the satisfaction of knowing that 100% of their race entry is used to help their family and fellow Iowans who are battling for their lives. Additionally, they get a fantastic swag bag. “We like to pride ourselves on having the best swag bag in the game. Our sponsors really come through for us and we like to make sure people feel like they get something for helping us out,” said Mauro. Finally, this year’s event is getting a special MC. Former Channel 13 news anchor Brooke Bouma will serve as celebrity guest ‘race starter’ and MC. Brooke grew up in Iowa and currently lives in Des Moines with her husband and three children. Not only does she support BSB, she will be running in the race! Brooke is on the record, saying, “I’m not an Olympic athlete and haven’t run for a while, but will absolutely love to help with a great cause and fund raiser.” To sign up, or to learn more about sponsorships, the committee, or the race itself, visit www.bloodsweatandbeersiowa.com.
