Love trails? Here’s how you can help! This is a great volunteer gig to do with a family member or friend safely outdoors AND supports our trails (something that has been very important to DSM during the pandemic)!
What is the National Bicycle & Pedestrian Documentation Project? Des Moines is a great place to bike, walk & run. With the help of hundreds of volunteers annually stationed at locations throughout the City, we participate in a nationwide bicyclist & pedestrian counting effort. The project uses a standardized methodology which helps us estimate trail users. All you have to do is count people on a clipboard in 15-minute intervals & return your counts after.
Join Us in 2022! We need volunteers to help make this a success & “adopt” a location! Volunteers are rewarded with $10 Bike-Ped Bucks if they volunteer for one shift or a free 2023 Des Moines Mayor's Annual Ride registration for volunteering for two or more shifts (*Bike-Ped Bucks are redeemable one time towards any admission, activity registration, facility or equipment rental, or membership).
Most locations will work best with two volunteers (one counting and one distributing survey cards), so we encourage you to sign up with family or a friend for even more fun! All supplies and a brief training are provided.
When is it? Shifts are available on September 13,14 and 17, 2022.
Why is this project important? It gives us data and feedback to help us identify and prioritize bicycle/pedestrian facilities and apply for trail grants.
