When Barry Phipps moved from Chicago to Iowa City in 2012, he knew nothing of Iowa. As a photographer and artist, he became intrigued by the state’s landscape and the state’s rural communities, taking road trips across the state and documenting locations as they are now. These photographs became the basis for his new book 'Between Gravity and What Cheer: Iowa Photographs', which was published in May.
Phipps will discuss that book and his adventures across Iowa. Several of his photographs and art will be on display at the Central Library throughout December and January. The program will serve as the finale for his showing. An episode of the DMPL Podcast featuring Phipps is also available at dmpl.org/podcast.
