Des Moines European Heritage Association invites you to explore the French language during this 10-week beginning French language course for adults (starting Thursday, April 26, 2018). During each 90-minute session, you will have the opportunity to learn language for everyday life and explore culture, all the while developing proficiency with grammar and vocabulary.

There will be assigned homework and studying each week. Unless you have previously taken the A1.1 course, a textbook and workbook will need to be purchased by the student prior to the beginning of the course in addition to the course fee of $120. These materials will need to be ordered online and cost approximately $50 (including shipping).

Please expect to spend 2.5 - 8 hours on homework every week. Everyone learns languages at their own pace. In order to remember it the best, you should spend about 20-30 minutes every day with your homework. Regular self-study and repetition or meeting with others might be helpful.
Having a general understanding of English grammar or having studied another language is helpful, but not required.
The course is structured to learn vocabulary and grammar from scratch while covering a variety of everyday topics.
This class is non-credit but designed to eventually lead to language proficiency in writing, reading and speaking.
This class should prepare you to take the DELF A1 French Language Exam at the end of two 13-week sessions. See for more information.
The books are from France and in French, however developed for non-native speakers with a goal of building proficiency.
Competencies required to enter A1.2: To join the A1.2 group, you would be able to introduce yourself, speak about your family and provide your contact information, as well as being familiar with vocabulary for telling time and speaking about free time activities. You would have a basic understanding of standard "-er" verbs and comment irregular verbs such as "être" and "faire" in the present tense. You would have a basic understanding of the difference between formal and informal speech (i.e. tu vs. vous).

Our adult language programs utilize the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) which is a guideline used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and other countries. CEFRL is a system of validation of language ability and can be utilized by job applicants and adult students to demonstrate their language proficiency.

We will meet at the Grand View University. You may park in the parking lot directly south of the Student Center (Y on the map). Click here for a campus map.
