The Iowa Architectural Foundation will kick off its Architecture on the Move season of walking tours of downtown Des Moines on May 12. Tours cover both contemporary and historic architecture. Other dates are June 16, July 14, Aug. 11 and Sept. 8. The cost is $15. Check-in is at 5 p.m. at the Iowa Center for Architecture in Capitol Square, where the tours will depart from at 5:30 p.m. Participants can choose from four routes. The north route will take in the city's more contemporary architecture, including the Catholic Pastoral Center, AEG's headquarters, Principal's corporate campus and the world-famous architects, such as Mies van der Rohe and Helmut Jahn, who have left their mark here. The south route includes Court Avenue, the Warehouse District, the World Food Prize and the Polk County Courthouse. The East Village will be featured on the east route, which will include background on the City Beautiful Movement and public buildings along the Riverwalk. The west route showcases some of the city's older, stately buildings such as the Temple for the Performing Arts, some of our most significant skyscrapers and new developments in the Western Gateway area. For reservations, contact the Iowa Architectural Foundation at 244-1888 or firstname.lastname@example.org. All proceeds benefit the Iowa Architectural Foundation's public educational programs.
