Foundation volunteers offer walking tours of downtown Des Moines every summer to educate the public about the balanced mix of historic and contemporary architecture in Iowa’s capital city.

Dates for the 2017 summer “Architecture on the Move” walking tours are:

  • May 12
  • June 16
  • July 14
  • August 11
  • September 8

Select from four tours:

NORTH: Insights into Des Moines’ contemporary architecture by world-famous architects

SOUTH: Hear about the history and future of the historic Court Avenue and Warehouse Districts

EAST: Enjoy a stroll through Des Moines’ revitalized East Village. Highlights include the City Beautiful Movement, the World Food Prize building, and the Riverwalk

WEST: Showcases some of Des Moines’ older, stately buildings as well as some significant skyscrapers.

Tour guides are not scripted, so each tour is unique and different. Tours typically last 90 minutes and are approximately 14 city blocks in length. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

The tours gather at 5:00 PM at the Iowa Center for Architecture, 400 Locust, Suite 100 in Capital Square, where you are invited to join us for wine, other beverages and light appetizers. Tours take off at 5:30 PM.  A Skywalk tour is available in case of inclement weather. Cost is $15 per person. All proceeds benefit IAF educational and community design programs.
