Architecture on the Move: Summer Walking Tours of Downtown Des Moines. 2018 dates are: May 11, June 15, July 13, August 10 and September 14. Walking downtown tours to educate the public about Des Moines’ vibrant architectural portfolio, both contemporary and historic. Select from four tours: • North: Learn insight into Des Moines’ more contemporary architecture, including the Catholic Pastoral Center, AEG’s headquarters, Principal’s corporate campus, and the world-famous architects, such as Mies van der Rohe and Helmut Jahn, who have left their mark here. • South: Walk through the historic Court Avenue and Warehouse District and learn about the history and future of this exciting entertainment and downtown living area. Includes World Food Prize and Polk County Courthouse. • East: Enjoy a stroll through Des Moines’ revitalized East Village. Highlights include background on the City Beautiful Movement and the Riverwalk’s public buildings. • West: This tour showcases some of Des Moines’ older, stately buildings such as the Temple for the Performing Arts, and some of our most significant skyscrapers and new developments in the Western Gateway area, including Krause Gateway Center Tour guides are not scripted, so each tour is unique and different. Tours last 90 minutes and are 14 city blocks in length. Comfortable shoes are recommended. The tours gather at 5:00 PM at the Iowa Center for Architecture, 400 Locust, Suite 100 in Capital Square, where you are invited to join us for wine, other beverages, and light appetizers. Tours take off at 5:30 PM. A Skywalk tour is available in case of inclement weather. Cost is $15 per person.
