‘Naturally Iowa’ by Photographer Gary Hoard
‘Naturally Iowa’ – This is a collection of recent photographic images on metal of Iowa plants, birds and animals in their natural environments. I also include some Iowa landscapes that evoke the feeling of peace and solitude that being ‘close to nature’ brings us.
Gary has been photographing for over 50 years, always with a special interest in nature. His interest in photography can be traced to his parents. His mother was an avid naturalist and gardener. His father, a former US Navy Photographer (based at Pearl Harbor at the time of the December 1941 attack), shared his lifelong interest in photography and provided guidance in photographic technique.
Gary enhances his photographic skills through learning more about the biology and habits of the plants and animals he targets, along with attending photo workshops and seminars. He currently spends most of his camera-time photographing at one of Iowa’s state or county parks, or in his home gardens. His photography reflects the delight he finds in nature each day, and he especially enjoys catching those images that result in a bit of a smile by the viewer.
Gary’s work has appeared in several exhibits and juried art shows including Reiman Garden Art Fair, Octagon Center for the Arts, Metro Arts Expo (Metro Arts Alliance), Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, Iowa State Fair Photography Salon, and the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. His photographs were used for the 2016 publication of the State Capitol Tour Guide. His photography is for sale at the Des Moines Farmer’s Market, Deck the Walls, Alexander’s Photo and the State Capitol Gift Shop.
Gallery hours are Tuesday and Wednesday 9 am to 1 pm, Thursday 4 pm to 7 pm, Friday 9am to 1pm and Saturday 9 am to noon. The Center is closed Sunday and Monday.
