DES MOINES, IA – Today, more than 4,000 visitors will catch Greater Des Moines for the 65th annual National Square Dance Convention. The convention, generating an estimated $3.2 million in economic impact, runs through Saturday, June 25 at the Iowa Events Center. Attendees represent all 50 states, China, Japan, Philippines, Australia, Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany and Canada.

“It has been more than 40 years since we’ve hosted this convention and we are excited to have it back in Greater Des Moines,” said Greg Edwards, President and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau and Des Moines Area Sports Commission. “This provides us a great opportunity to showcase our dynamic city to visitors from around the world.”

Starting Thursday, attendees can participate in traditional square dance workshops, clogging, contra, line, and round dancing. Dancing will take place for nearly 10 hours each day, with a live band performing at night. A select group of dancers will also be performing at surprise locations throughout the city.

“We look forward to introducing square dance and all of its benefits to the Greater Des Moines community,” said Jim Winslow, General Chair of the National Square Dance Convention. “We have strong registration numbers from across the globe and state, with more than 450 Iowans registered to attend.”

The public is invited to participate for $75, or come watch the action for just $5. All ages and skill levels are welcome. On-site story opportunities will include:
