The Iowa Tourism Office and the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau have partnered with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD) to provide a rolling billboard to promote travel to Des Moines.

The ABD delivery truck encourages travelers to “Catch Unexpected Moments” with images featuring Iowa Cubs baseball, the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park, the Iowa State Capitol and water park fun.

“Des Moines is experiencing a renaissance,” said Greg Edwards, President and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s important to educate visitors on the revitalized attractions, events, hotels and venues in Greater Des Moines. We’re challenging visitors to catch the unexpected in Des Moines.”

The truck is one of nine ABD trucks that are wrapped with images from communities across the state. Eight other trucks promote Ames, Burlington, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City/Coralville, Newton, Sioux City and Waterloo. Each truck displays graphics promoting Iowa travel in general.

“Traveling takes many forms—watching your son or daughter play in a soccer tournament out-of-town, visiting friends and family or just getting away from it all,” said Governor Terry Branstad. “You don’t have to go far to make a lasting memory with your family and there’s plenty to do right here in Iowa.”

The Iowa Tourism Office images feature Maquoketa Caves in Maquoketa, Arnolds Park Amusement Park in Okoboji, the Loess Hills in western Iowa and Sky Tours Ziplines in Dubuque.

Tourism in Polk County generates more than $1.6 billion in expenditures, employs almost 14,900 people and generates $67.4 million in state taxes, according to a U.S. Travel Association economic impact study prepared for the Iowa Tourism Office. Statewide, tourism generates more than $7 billion in expenditures, 63,400 jobs and $328 million in state taxes.
