The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau and Des Moines Area Sports Commission has learned that the 2016 US Olympic Trials will take place in Eugene, OR.

“We respect USA Track and Field’s decision,” said Greg Edwards, President/CEO of the Greater Des Moines Convention & Visitors Bureau and Des Moines Area Sports Commission. “We know that Des Moines, Iowa is Track Central USA and we will continue our quest to host the US Olympic Trials. Our strategies and focus will immediately move toward the 2020 Trials.”

Numerous track and field events have taken place at Drake Stadium, including the Drake Relays, 2009 AAU Junior Olympics, 2010 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, 2011 and 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Additionally, approximately 20 Olympic medalists will be competing at Drake Stadium June 19-23, 2013 during the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

“We know what we need to do in order to gain further traction in hosting the US Olympic Trials,” said Edwards. “One key piece is to fill Drake Stadium and demonstrate on national television that we are Track Central USA during the USA Track & Field Championships. The same individuals running this event are the individuals involved in making Olympic Trials decisions. We believe Des Moines is still in the running for 2020 and beyond.”
